From the President - February, 2010
With the new year upon us, I would like to wish you the best and hope that 2010 fills your offices with travelers! January 12th Haiti was struck by a devastating earthquake. In response the PNW ASTA chapter has proposeded to donate $1500 to the Red Cross in support of their relief efforts in Haiti. I thank you all for your continued support of ASTA and our ability to reach out to the world. On a brighter note, I hope you enjoyed the holidays and are looking forward to a fresh start in '10. With all the resources ASTA offers us from education to networking opportunities, there is much to look forward to this year.
As April approaches I hope you are excited to travel to Istanbul with your fellow ASTA members for the fifth annual International Destination Expo. Remember, there are still free hotel rooms available for qualified travel agents and media, in addition to many great seminars, courses and tours. Don't miss out; register now and go to Istanbul!
I can't help reflecting on the future whenver the new year rolls around, and I'm sure I'm not the only one. The future of our industry lies in the hands of young professionals to join us, learn from us and expand the business of selling travel. ASTA's Young Professionals Society (YPS) is a group geared toward promoting travel careers and encouraging young people to become travel agents. What a great idea! We all need to be focused on making sure the industry stays strong and continues to grow, both in size and perspective. Take a look at the most recent featured young professional on ASTA.org, Leah M. Smith. She is 27 and the owner and president of her own travel agency in Garden Grove, Calif., as well as being an ASTA Premium member. She is ambitious and ready to tackle the social media frontier with her fellow young professionals on behalf of the industry. As part of her best tactics for finding new destinations and learning about what travelers are looking for are blogs, if you can believe it. She follows travelers who blog about their adventures and learns the most from this type of first-hand experience. Learn more about Leah on ASTA.org (and her Twitter, Facebook and blog) and the YPS. Learning from each other is the biggest benefit of belonging to an association where we can networking and put our heads together to help grow our businesses.
Best,
Alex Trettin, Chapter Presidentt
